What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction is a prayerful conversation that helps you notice God’s presence, listen more closely, and discern what the Lord is inviting you to do in your life. A spiritual director offers trained, faithful guidance—helping you reflect on your experience in the light of Scripture, prayer, and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Spiritual direction is not about being “told what to do.” It is a space to grow in freedom and truth, to name what is happening in your heart, and to take your next step with greater peace and clarity—relying on the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit.
Sessions are available online and in person in Sydney, Australia.
Keys to Fruitfulness
Spiritual direction bears the most fruit when you come with honesty, preparation, and a desire to grow. Here are four simple keys that can help you make the most of each session.
The Examination of Conscience
Before your session, take a little time to pray and reflect on what you want to bring.
Many people find it helpful to spend quiet time before the tabernacle, asking the Lord:
- What do You want me to see?
- What do You want me to bring into the light?
If it helps, jot down a few points or questions so you can stay focused during the session.
Sincerity
Sincerity means coming with the truth—without excuses, exaggeration, or fear. There is no need for shame if you find yourself returning to the same struggle again and again. Growth is often gradual.
A good spiritual direction relationship is patient and steady, helping you keep turning toward God with honesty and hope.
Docility
Docility is the willingness to be guided—to receive counsel with humility, and to try what is suggested. This doesn’t mean switching off your mind. It means being open to God’s invitation, even when it stretches you.
If you receive a practical recommendation (a prayer practice, a reflection, a small act of virtue), consider writing it down so you can return to it during the week.
Constancy
Spiritual growth is supported by consistency. A regular time for spiritual direction helps you stay attentive, prevents long gaps, and keeps your prayer and discernment grounded in real life.
Choose a frequency that is realistic for your season of life, and commit to it with peace.
